Besando las fronteras de Uzbekistán y Kazajstán, el Mar de Aral del Norte está experimentando un resurgimiento ecológico tras un largo período de declive.
En 2005, un proyecto de $ 86 millones del Banco Mundial hizo reparaciones a los diques y pagó la construcción de una presa de ocho millas.
El proyecto elevó los niveles de agua del mar hasta 11 pies en solo siete meses, yendo mucho más allá de las esperanzas de los científicos de un aumento en tres años.

La construcción de la presa Kokaral al sur del río Syr Darya ha demostrado ser el catalizador de un increíble resurgimiento de las poblaciones de peces locales. Más allá de esta gran noticia para las comunidades pesqueras locales, la recuperación del mar también ha llevado a una reducción en las tasas de enfermedades locales por el agua potable anteriormente contaminada.

Una vez que fue el cuarto lago de agua dulce más grande de la Tierra, a partir de la década de 1960, el mar de Aral se contrajo drásticamente después de que los ríos que lo alimentaban fueran desviados por proyectos de irrigación soviéticos, tanto que se dividió en los mares de Aral del Norte y del Sur. Cuando esto sucedió, el aumento de la salinidad en el agua provocó la muerte de varias especies de peces como la dorada y la perca, dejando a la platija resistente como el único animal capaz de lidiar con el alto contenido de sal.

 

Una pesca con esperanza


Entre 1957 y 1987, las capturas de pescado cayeron de 48,000 por año a cero. Ahora desde que se construyó la presa de Kokaral, los niveles de sal han vuelto a la normalidad. Como resultado, las poblaciones de peces han vuelto a la vida.
National Geographic informa que en 2018, los límites de captura se establecieron en unas generosas 8.200 toneladas: un aumento del 600% desde 2006.

Muchas de las comunidades circundantes dependen de la pesca para su sustento, y para Askar Zhumashev, de 42 años, supervisor de la planta de procesamiento de Kambala Balyk, ha visto la recuperación de primera mano en la ciudad interior de Aralsk, donde él y su equipo procesan aproximadamente 500 toneladas de pescado al año.

‘’Cuando nací, el mar ya se había ido’’, dijo Zhumashev a National Geographic. ‘’Fui al Mar de Aral por primera vez hace solo dos años. Mis padres solían decirme que los barcos entraban y salían todos los días del puerto viejo’’.

El Banco Mundial siguió con un esfuerzo para restaurar los hábitats de deltas y humedales en la parte de Uzbekistán del Mar de Aral a través del Proyecto de Drenaje, Riego y Humedales.
El proyecto se basa en un exitoso programa piloto que vio la restauración del lago Sudochi de 100.000 acres (40.000 hectáreas) en otras partes de la región.

La pesca no solo se beneficia de la mejora del hábitat de los humedales y deltas. La ganadería y la agricultura también mejoran. Desde que comenzó el proyecto, la salinidad de los ríos y delta ha vuelto a la normalidad, lo que permite a los agricultores locales regar sus cultivos.
