Cuenca del Río Chubut

 

Caracterización

El Río Chubut, posee una amplia cuenca que se extiende desde los 41º 29` (a unos 2.300 metros de altura) hasta los 43º 45`de Latitud Sur y cuenta con numerosos afluentes en su alta cuenca. Su recorrido total es de 867 kilómetros; su cuenca abarca unos 29.400 km2 y desemboca finalmente en el Océano Atlántico, en Bahía Engaño. Su régimen de precipitaciones es de alrededor de 800 mm. en sus nacientes en el Oeste, y desciende a unos 200 mm. a aproximadamente 50 kilómetros al Este, siendo prácticamente insignificante en el resto de la cuenca.-

El caudal medio de este río es de 47 m3/seg. y alimenta el embalse Florentino Ameghino, que tiene una superficie de 71 km2. Existen tres sectores bien diferenciados de la cuenca: el curso superior, el medio y el curso inferior.-

El curso superior incluye la cuenca de su red de drenaje y pueden distinguirse en él 4 subcuencas, que aportan aguas desde el norte hacia la margen izquierda: Subcuenca del Alto Chubut, del Fofo Cahuel, del Ñorquinco, del Chico del Norte; y dos subcuencas que lo hacen sobre su margen derecha: Subcuenca del Lepá, que baja desde el oeste, y Subcuenca del Tecka-Gualjaina, que desde el sur recibe las aguas del Lepá para unirse al Chubut en el punto en que se considera culmina su curso superior.-

En el curso medio las precipitaciones son muy escasas y no alcanzan a formar cursos de agua permanentes; sólo escurre a través de cañadones que forman cursos de tipo temporario.-

El curso inferior se extiende por unos 200 kilómetros entre Las Plumas y su desembocadura en la Bahía Engaño. Sin duda adquiere relevancia la presencia del dique Florentino Ameghino (ubicado a unos 15 kilómetros aguas debajo de la unión del Río Chubut con el Río Chico), que tienen una capacidad de embalse de 1.855 Hm3; cubre unas 7.400 hectáreas sobre los valles de ambos cursos de agua; regula el caudal del Chubut; permite el riego de 22.000 hectáreas que son destinadas a la producción agrícola y produce energía desde 1.968.-

En este tramo el Río Chubut recibe un afluente temporario, el Río Chico del Sur, (de dirección suroeste-noreste, que proviene de la cuenca del Senguerr y de los Lagos Muster – Colhue Huapi), como también hay importantes cañadones que suelen ser afluentes cuando hay períodos de precipitaciones abundantes. Luego del Dique Florentino Ameghino, el curso inferior del río se ha aprovechado con la creación de dos Canales Principales de Riego (el Norte y el Sur) que permiten el riego para la agricultura formando un oasis.-

Ello ha permitido el afincamiento de población, contribuyendo a la formación de las ciudades de Rawson (capital de la provincia), Trelew, Gaiman, Dolavon y 28 de Julio. El aprovechamiento integral de la Cuenca hace que además se abastezca de agua potable para la población, y para uso industrial de la planta de aluminio de la ciudad de Puerto Madryn.-
